The Tawas Point Light was important to the development of transportation on Lake Huron. Originally built in 1852, the light had to be moved in 1876 because Tawas Point, on which it sits, had moved more than a mile due to shifting sands. Located in the Saginaw Bay, Tawas point sits at the end of a peninsula, which separates Tawas Bay from Lake Huron. The conical, 67-foot brick tower and attached keepers quarters are one of the best kept in Michigan and stand today as an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.
